The backstage area is a hallowed place alive with concentration and nervous energy. Singers on repeat, hum and whisper their first entrances. An army of technicians roars into action shifting gargantuan scenery with the slightest of pushes. Lighting rigs buzz threateningly overhead. Prop tables gleam with the promise of future necessity. All unseen. All secret. The red curtain guards it all from the prying eyes of the paying public. The conductor is called to the podium. The mists descend as the chorus clatters down the stairwell. Everyone is ready. As the curtain rises that perfect contradiction of total control and total freedom is about to commence.

I am a photographer specialising in capturing the backstage world of opera. With just under two decades experience working in theatres, concerts halls, and opera houses I pride myself in being able to capture this wonderful space with an insider's eye as unobtrusively as possible.

Opera Houses and Concert Halls

Oper Stuttgart, Berlin Philharmonie, Haus der Berliner Festspiele, Sydney Opera House, Prinzregententheater (München), Tokyo Opera City, The Colliseum (London), Wigmore Hall (London), Usher Hall (Edinburgh).
